I’ve never worked with a copywriter before. How does this whole process work, anyway?

It starts and ends with a lot of communication. We’ll talk about your project needs and your vision for the end result before I put a single word on paper (or keyboard). I’ll come up with a creative brief for your project and take it from there. Once I turn in the initial copy, we’ll have two rounds of revision (included in my fees) to get it just right. If you’d like to learn more about the process, read my blog posts on working with a copywriter for the first time and how to craft a creative vision.

How do we get started?
After we’ve gone over the details of your project over the phone or via email, I’ll submit a quote outlining project costs and the estimated time of completion. If all looks well and dandy, I’ll send you my contract and an invoice for the first half of the payment. Both the signed contract and initial payment must be received before work can begin.

Do you charge an hourly rate or a flat fee for copywriting projects?
I charge a flat fee based on the project scope and timeline. To get an idea of where these prices ranges may fall, download the Inky Clean Pricing Menu.

What happens if your prices don’t fit my budget?
I’m always happy to work with your budget and offer alternative approaches to your project.

How long will it take to complete my project?
That really depends on the scope of your project. Writing copy for an email newsletter won’t take nearly as long as creating content for a brand new website. If you have a deadline in mind, let me know and I’ll do my best to work within that timeframe. Keep in mind that if you “need this done yesterday” a 20% rush fee may apply.

Do you specialize in my field? Have you written about xyz before?
I’ve written about so many different subjects, from feng shui to skin care to petsitting to neurosurgery, that by now my specialty is  writing. I ask the right questions so that I can understand all sorts of specialities. Then I write about it in a way that people who aren’t specialists–those who are coming to you with a need–will understand how they can benefit from what you’re offering.

What if I don’t like what you write?
There are always two rounds of revisions included in my copywriting fees, but the real steps to ensure you’re happy with the final product are taken long before I write a single word. First, we’ll have a very in-depth conversation about your project needs and come up with a creative brief outlining all the details. I’ll ask you lots of questions, take a couple of days to really think about the creative direction, then follow up with you if I have more questions. Once I absolutely know we’re on the same page and that I clearly understand your copy wants and needs, I start writing.

When you receive the initial draft, I incorporate your feedback and make any necessary changes until you’re absolutely in love with the copy. The first two rounds of revision are included; any additional rounds are billed at an hourly rate. To be completely honest, though, none of my clients have ever needed more than two rounds, and in most cases, one round of minor edits and tweaks did the trick!

Where  can I find writing samples?
You’ll find my copywriting samples here and some of my magazine articles (soon to come). Feel free to email me if you’d like to see more.

I’m interested in your editing services. Where can I find samples of projects you’ve edited?
Short of posting “before” and “after” documents, it’s difficult to display editing samples because the mark of great editing is no mark at all. If you have a book-length work that needs proofreading or copyediting, contact me for a free 3-page sample edit, which I include in all my editing quotes. I also provide developmental editing for fiction writers.

I don’t live in Austin; can you still work on my copywriting project remotely?
Absolutely. I’ve worked with clients all over the world and across many different time zones. Every step of the copywriting process, from the contract signing, initial consultation, payment and document collaboration, can be done online.

How can I contact you?
I answer all my emails within one business day and in most cases within just a couple of hours. You can also send me a Tweet (I love a good Twitter conversation!).
